MYSTERY OF SYNCHRONICITY … THE PHANTOM KNIFE
Psychiatrist Carl Jung coined the word synchronicity to describe events of meaningful coincidence with no apparent causal relationship.
MYKONOS
When I was traveling through Europe in 1981, I lost my Swiss Army Knife on Paradise Beach on Mykonos, Greece’s island paradise in the heart of the Cyclades on the often turbulent Aegean Sea. According to myth, Mykonos was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. The island took its name from “Mykonos,” grandson of the Greek god Apollo.
TIME TRAVELING
Fast forward nearly thirty-five years later to 2015: One morning, I opened the door to my studio cabin in a mountain town in the high desert of New Mexico. There lying on the welcome mat was the Swiss Army Knife that I had lost all those years ago.
Was it, in fact, the knife I had lost, I wondered, and how can this be? The knife had seen much bad road.
A mystery had arrived at my door. I asked around, including the UPS and FedEx drivers if they had lost such a knife. No lost knife from them.
SYNCHRONICITY, I PRESUME
I can’t explain how or why this knife ‘returned’ to me any better than Jung’s concept of synchronicity—where events, including miracles, happen that cannot be rationally explained.
Synchronities are all around us. Many have experienced this synchronicity: you’re thinking of someone and in that instant, they call. Something to consider: not having an apparent causal relationship between events does not mean that there isn’t one. We are too close to see the vast web of connections.
CONNECTING ON A DEEPER INTUITIVE LEVEL
My art-making is based on the physical flow of spontaneous intuition, which involves a remarkable journey. Impulses of energy and information surge down my arm and, through improvisation, I compose visual jazz with line and color. If the art-making is magic, then the art is magic.
